DENTURE RELINES

Denture relining is an important procedure and should be done regularly as a denture maintenance. Relining of your denture is required when your denture doesn’t fit and becomes quite loose in your mouth. It is a procedure that will readapt the underside of the denture so it fits more comfortably and snug.

This is because the bone loss (shrinkage) changes the shape of the jaw and gum line. Relining will readapt your denture to your mouth by adding a new base material to the tissue side of your denture.

Why is a denture reline necessary?

Once teeth are extracted, the soft tissue and the bone that once surrounded your teeth start to resorb (shrink) and change it’s shape. This process starts immediately following the teeth removal and it is quite significant during the first three months post extractions. These changes will be ongoing, however some people experience them more than others.

All these changes lead to the denture not fitting snuggly and becoming loose and painful. Patients often find that it is difficult to speak or eat without the denture becoming unstable.

Benefits of relining dentures

  • Improved fit and comfort

  • Enhanced stability and suction

  • Better chewing ability

  • Prevents food from getting trapped under the denture

  • Can prolong the life of your denture

How long does it take to reline a denture?

We understand that for most people, going without their dentures is daunting. Relining a denture takes a few hours and if timed properly, most patients get to have their dentures back on the same day. It is important that relines are planed and scheduled in advance to avoid disappointment. If you would like to find out more about the process, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.
